The present evaluation of current understanding of interstellar CH(+) notes that the essential features of this chemistry were identified by Bates and Spitzer in 1951, with more recent work defining those pathways within which these chemical essentials can most efficiently function. Attention is presently given to low temperature gas-phase chemistry in static clouds, interstellar shocks, turbulent interfaces, and photon-dominated regions.
