Bessel BVRI photometric data was gathered for 961 galaxies and 384 stars from the central 1 Mpc of six rich Abell clusters. These clusters where Abell 576, 957, 1185, 1377, 2063 and 2657. Each object was examined with two fitting functions and an asymptotic magnitude was determined. One fitting function produced a shape parameter beta which, when taken in combination with the color index (B - I), showed a breakdown of the three basic morphological types (E, S0, and S) into six beta-types. These six beta-types could be determined on images where visual classification was extremely uncertain. Therefore, this technique provides a tool for classification of galaxies from coursely sampled data or from the deepest HST fields. In addition, the beta parameter provided a method of star-galaxy separation which was 96% efficient. The breakdown of the galaxies into six beta-types provided a probe into the nature of these rich Abell clusters. An examination of the luminosity functions, overall color indices, and counts of the various beta-types show differences in the clusters based on their Rood-Sastry type. These differences may provide clues to the underlying physics for the creation and evolution of these clusters. (SECTION: Dissertation Summary)
