The optical variability of blazars has been an essential diagnostic tool for probing both the structure and the physical processes responsible for the strong and highly variable emission observed for blazars. The detection of variability led to the present-day physical picture of blazars and identifies some of the most important questions that remain to be answered in the future. Key breakthroughs in this area are summarized, and new results based on statistical studies of the variability are reported.
