Astronomical observations indicate there exist substantial magnetic fields in galaxies and on even larger scales such as in cluster of galaxies. The origin of such magnetic fields with large coherent length, however, is still a mystery. Several models have been proposed to explain the origin, which are often involved with inflation in the early universe, or astrophysical activities during structure formation of the universe. Here we show that cosmological density perturbations in photons and baryons, especially the anisotropic stress in photons can source the cosmological magnetic fields. Our study is based upon the cosmological perturbation theory, which is quite successful in a sense that it can explain the large scale structure of the universe and the anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background. Thus our results are quite robust and give the precise amount of magnetic fields which should inevitably exist at cosmological scales.
