Scientific paper

We request support for an archival study of red galaxies in the Chandra Deep Field South. We have identified a large sample of galaxies with red optical-to-IR colors {I-K > 4} in the GOODS ACS images of the CDFS. We will use these data, and similar data from a larger area survey by Rix et al., in conjunction with 8-color photometry and redshifts from the Las Camanas IR survey to examine the nature of the red galaxy population. Our sample contains more than 100 extremely red galaxies in the GOODS CDFS field and will include an additional approximately 300 I-K > 4 galaxies in the Rix et al. area. We will use quantitative morphological classification tools to examine the morphologies of both the ERO population and the overall population of K-band selected and photo-z sorted galaxies. This program will probe the 1 < z < 2 range, a critical epoch in the growth of galaxies and structure.
