Hst Proposal Id #9940 Galaxies

Scientific paper

Using the recently released ``WFPC2 Associations'' imaging database available from MAST and the soon-to-be-released ancillary catalogs, our scientific goal is to quantify and document the two-dimensional morphological evolution of galaxies in the redshift range z = 0.0-0.3. This will fill the gap between the local {NGC/UGC/ESO} universe and the distant {HDF} universe. Our region is only sparsely sampled by the MDS. Culled from over 50, 000 individual WFPC2 frames, galaxies imaged within nearly 10 deg of high-Galactic-latitude sky are available to this project: an area not likely to be superceded by any future anticipated HST survey. HST has provided a wealth of images of galaxies and strong evidence for the evolution of galaxies in luminosity, color and over-all morphology. However, the region between the local and the high-redshift parts of the universe {corresponding to a look- back time of about a third of the age of the Universe} has not been well studied, due to a paucity of galaxies in the samples so far studied. This proposal aims to quantify the detailed structure and spatial distribution of the star-formation activity for galaxies out to a redshift range of z = 0.3-0.6. These data are essential for identifying the dominant physical mechanisms and causal processes giving rise to the luminosity evolution of galaxies, and as quantitative input for, and constraints upon, models of galaxy evolution
