Hst Proposal Id #9920 Cosmology

Scientific paper

We propose to analyze multi-color ACS images of ~200 z=1 early-type galaxies in the extended GOODS HDF North in conjunction with high quality Keck spectra. Resolved dynamical data and diagnostics of recent star formation will be analyzed with morphologies and color inhomogeneities quantified from ACS data to address how stars assemble in early type galaxies over 1 < z < 2. Our proposal follows logically from a successful campaign utilizing a limited sample in the smaller WFPC-2 HDF-N field. Access to the GOODS archive will increase the sample 20-fold and enable more robust conclusions on a question which represents a key challenge for hierarchical theories of galaxy formation.
