Various types of general information on asteroids are summarized. Attention is given to the discovery and identification of asteroids, the main asteroid belt, asteroid orbits, the total number and mass of asteroids, the Kirkwood gaps, Hirayama families, the origin of the main belt, determinations of asteroid albedos and diameters, asteroid surface types, and asteroid spectra. The Apollo, Amor, and Trojan groups are briefly described. It is noted that primitive materials which condensed directly from the primordial solar-system gas and dust cloud may still survive intact in some of the asteroids.
