A rather peculiar result that arises in Einstein's theory of gravitation in a spherically symmetric field is presented for the case of a supermassive star expanding inside its gravitational radius (a white hole) and a thin shell of dustlike matter contracting toward the star in an external region. The shell is assumed to be a portion of the Oppenheimer-Snyder (1939) dust cloud. Calculations are performed which show that the dust shell crosses the total gravitational radius of the system before colliding with the star, so that although most of the matter in the system moves outward, the system appears as a black hole to external observers. It is found, however, that the boundary of the system continues to move inward after the collision, indicating that the dust shell forces the star to recontract after their encounter. It is concluded that even an extremely thin contracting dust shell can prevent the expansion of a supermassive star.
