As an explanation of the peculiar properties of certain pulsars with anomalously small period derivatives it is suggested, that the barycenter of the solar system is accelerated, possibly because the sun is a member of a binary system and has a hitherto undetected companion star. The companion star is presumably either a faint white or red dwarf in closed orbit about the sun, or a gas-accreting nearby neutron star or black hole in open orbit. The proposed binary system could explain why the comet cloud, during the lifetime of the solar system, has expanded to its present size.
