During the Cir X-1 radio outbursts of December 14-19, 1976, H I absorption observations were made with the Parkes 64-m telescope. The results were compared with a profile obtained on December 6, 1976, when the radio source was quiescent, and it was found that H I absorption extended to the velocity associated with the tangential point. The resulting lower limit to the distance is approximately 8 kpc, about a factor of two larger than previous estimates.
