In this talk I will summarize some of my recent results on secular evolution of barred galaxies, emphasizing the role of the halo. In particular, I will discuss the effect of a central mass concentration, the effect of velocity anisotropy in the halo velocity distribution, the orbital structure in the halo of strongly barred galaxies and how triaxiality can affect the expected annihilation signal from weakly interacting particles in the central regions of disc galaxies with bars.
