We review several theoretical calculations of the IMF resulting from simulations of gravoturbulent fragmentation. The power-law behaviour of the IMF at high masses is obtained in almost all cases. It is suggested to be associated (at least partly) with accretion onto a clump mass distribution imprinted on the turbulent velocity distribution. The peak of the IMF at lower masses is obtained irrespectively of the turbulent driving and it is related to the Jeans mass, hence the thermodynamic behaviour of the gas. Several experiments have shown that the peak of the IMF shifts to lower masses if the gas is allowed to cool slowly or to higher masses in case of gas in a starburst environment that gets progressively heated.
