A general formulation of kinematic stability coefficients is established. It is shown that the signature of these coefficients cannot be satisfactorily correlated with the vibrational stability of stars in thermal imbalance. The intuitive concept of vibrational stability is analyzed and identified with Liapunov's asymptotic stability. A thermodynamic technique for constructing Liapunov functions is introduced. The relevance and feasibility of the method are illustrated by applying the procedure to supermassive stars in contraction along a Hayashi track. It is shown analytically that these stars are vibrationally unstable.
