Results are reported for radio interferometric observations of the neutral hydrogen associated with the optical core (the central 20 arcmin) of the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. 'Clean' neutral hydrogen and continuum maps with a resolution of 2.3 arcmin (330 pc) are presented. The broad distribution of the central neutral hydrogen is found to be in the form of a crude elliptical ring crossed by a bridge that closely coincides with the dense optical bar of the galaxy; the total mass of neutral hydrogen is estimated to be between 150 million and 240 million solar masses. The 21-cm continuum distribution is examined, observed emission nebulae are discussed, and the neutral- and ionized-gas contents of these nebulae are evaluated. A previously plotted distribution of blue stars is compared with the neutral hydrogen surface density, and the kinematics of the optical core of NGC 6822 is investigated. The results indicate that: (1) the bar in NGC 6822 is well-delineated by the blue stars; (2) the gas and stars in the core of the galaxy correspond well in both position and surface density; (3) the star formation rate is proportional to the gas surface density raised to the 1.5 power; (4) the kinematics appears to be dominated by a disklike system in rotation; and (5) large-scale noncircular motions are important in the galaxy's structure.
