This progress report is related to Apr. 1995 - Jan. 1996. The following results are reported: (1) The imaging and spectroscopic survey of galaxies in fields of HST spectroscopic target QSO's was enlarged substantially by obtaining new spectroscopic observations with a variety of telescopes; (2) A group or cluster of Ly-alpha-absorbing galaxies at redshift z approx. 0.26 was identified; (3) The first HST WFPC2 observations of galaxies responsible for Ly-alpha absorption systems were obtained and analyzed, based on archival HST data. A new code to fit disk and bulge galaxy surface brightness profiles to faint galaxies was developed and applied to these images; (4) A measurement of the galaxy-absorber cross-correlation function as it depends on velocity and impact parameter separation was made; (5) A new galaxy identification, classification, and measurement program based on principle component analysis was developed, tested, and implemented; (6) An investigation of the absorption properties of galaxies in the immediate vicinities of QSO's was completed; (7) A search of the HST archives for moderate-redshift (0.05 less than z less than 1.6) damped Ly-alpha absorption system was completed; (8) Observations of the chemical content of four damped Ly-alpha absorption systems identified in the previous survey have been obtained; (9) A search for infrared emission from galaxies responsible for three damped Ly-alpha absorption systems has been started; (10) An analysis of damped Ly-alpha absorption systems at high redshifts based on observations of the Large Bright Quasar Survey was completed; and (11) An observational limit on the time variation of the proton-to-electron inertial mass ratio was obtained, based on a high-resolution spectrum of molecular hydrogen absorption lines at a redshift of z approx. 2.8.
