The outgassing release factor for nonradiogenic volatiles (such as water) on Mars since the end of accretion is calculated using the current value of the Ar-40 release factor and a correction coefficient derived from the history of volcanism on Mars. The Ar-40 release factor is calculated from the bulk K content of the planet and its current atmospheric inventory of Ar-40. The correction coefficient compensates for the variable abundance of Ar-40 in the Martian mantle through time versus the relatively constant nonradiogenic volatile abundance, and for the variable rate at which outgassing has occurred on Mars. The results yield a nonradiogenic release coefficient between 1.4 and 2.8. The outgassing release factor for nonradiogenic volatiles is calculated to be between 0.017 and 0.112.
