Investigation of the radiation emitted by AGN is discussed in terms of the contributions of X-ray observations. A review of properties of AGN that can be examined in the X-ray band includes luminosity, density, mass, change in mass of the central object with time, origin of the energy, and the origin of the continuum. The material in the central object can also be studied such as the accretion flow and collimating structures; X-ray emission from jets and line-of-sight obstacles can also be investigated. The 2-10 keV X-ray band can give information about the composition of the central object, and 1-100 keV radiation is thought to represent initial unreprocessed radiation. It is concluded that an observatory dedicated to effective X-ray studies requires a collecting area of more than 3000 sq cm, an energy range of 0.1-10 keV, good spatial resolution, and a non-low-earth orbit. Small missions are proposed to investigate parameters for the optimization of observatories dedicated to AGN study and thereby develop a very large observatory.
