A radial-azimuthal stability analysis of thin accretion disk flow around a black hole or weakly magnetized neutron star is presented. Using the alpha disk formalism, it is shown that the viscous instability is present only for purely radial perturbations. Upon coupling radial and azimuthal perturbations, the thermal instability exhibits a retrograde rotation through the disk, the period for which is found to be six-sevenths the disk Keplerian period.
