Results are reported from spectroscopic observations of the optical counterpart of Cyg X-2, performed using the William Herschel Telescope between June 9 and 27, 1988, as part of an international observing campaign, comprising X-ray, UV, optical, and radio observations. The properties of the emission lines in the optical spectrum show large variations, which do not appear to be correlated with the orbital phase. A comparison with (near-) simultaneous X-ray data shows that the He II 4686-A and the Bowen 4630-A emission lines become stronger as the X-ray source moves from the horizontal branch towards the flaring branch of the Z-shaped track in the X-ray color-color diagram.
