Using photoionization models of various sequences of planetary nebulae evolving with their central stars, different methods for determining observational positions of the stars in the HR diagram were examined. It is shown that the 'observed' positions are often very different from the true ones. This is particularly pronounced if one uses the nebular H-beta flux (or radio flux) to determine the stellar temperature and/or luminosity. The reason is that planetary nebulae, especially if they surround less massive nuclei, become quickly partly transparent to the H-ionizing photons. The paper also warns against simplified methods for determining the stellar parameters, such as excitation class or energy-balance method based on measurements of a limited sample of emission lines in the nebular spectrum.
