The authors present a 10-micron image of comet Halley, taken only seven hours before the Giotto encounter, that shows a broad fan of dust extending from the sunward side of the nucleus. A simple calculation of the surface brightness based on the Giotto DIDSY measurements indicates that fluffy particles are necessary to account for the observed 10-micron surface brightness.
