Almost 200 CCD images were taken between March 3-24 1986 using the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope and filters identical to those incorporated in the Halley multicolor camera. The filter set contained narrow-band filters to isolate C2 (570nm), C3 (410nm) and OH (320nm) emissions and the dust continuum at 450nm and 730nm, as well as several wide band filters. Each 512x320 pixel image covered an area 180,000 x 110,000km with seeing limited resolution of 400 to 800km. The inner coma structure changed dramatically from night to night and the dust images exhibit a number of jets. A series of these taken 5 hr before Giotto encounter were used to estimate the dust density along the trajectory for comparison with data from the dust impact detection system.
