Maffei 1 is a nearby, highly obscured, early-type galaxy (Maffei 1968, Spinrad et al. 1971, Luppino & Tonry 1993 = LT93). Based on measurements of K-band surface brightness fluctuations, LT93 determined a distance modulus of 28.1 +/- 0.25. As part of a larger programme, we have obtained a K-band spectrum of Maffei 1 using the KPNO 2.1m with the OSU-NOAO Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (ONIS). As compared to other field ellipticals in our sample (Silva & Bothun 1998a,b), Maffei 1 appears to have a ``normal'' elliptical spectrum, albeit with slightly stronger M-star features, suggesting higher than expected mean metallicity. Based on a theoretical analysis recently completed by Mei, Quinn, & Silva (2000), the inferred higher mean metallicity further suggests that the LT93 SBF distance measurement is systematically 5 - 10% too small.
