We present high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra obtained with the FOCES Echelle Spectrograph at the 2.2 meter telescope in Calar Alto, Spain to determine the distance to the star forming cloud MBM12. We observed the NaI D lines in stars that are projected along the line of sight to the cloud and have parallax measurements from the Hipparcos satellite. Since the stars are at a range of distances we use their spectra along with their measured parallaxes from Hipparcos to determine the distance to the molecular gas. The stars in front of the cloud do not show interstellar NaI D absorption features while the stars behind the cloud do show interstellar absorption features. Although previous observations confirm that MBM12 is the nearest known molecular cloud to the sun with ongoing star-formation (distance 30--90 pc), they are not sufficient for deriving parameters (e.g., age and luminosity) for the T Tauri stars (TTS) in the cloud. These observations are aimed at constraining the distance to the cloud. This research is supported by the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft.
