On April 11, 1986, between 0045 and 1008 UT 37 exposures of comet Halley were obtained with a focal reducer attached to the 1m telescope of the European Southern Observatory. The pictures have a field of 30 arcmin and, with few exceptions, were taken in 1 nm wavelength bands centered at 367.4 and 425.2 nm to show the CO2(+) and CO(+) ion tail. The narrow wavelength band suppresses the coma efficiently and allows to study the cometary plasma particles much closer to the nucleus than previously possible. On April 11 the comet was very active and a tail disconnection occurred. The observed plasma motions confirm results of earlier studies but the relation between tail ray formation and kinks in the main tail can be more clearly established. No plasma envelopes are detected on the images. The appearance of tail rays is preceded by a rapid ejection of a diffuse cloud into the direction of the rays.
