We present results from RXTE monitoring observations of the galactic center. RXTE has performed a raster scan of a rectangular region approximately 16(o) X 18(o) surrounding the galactic center on a twice weekly basis from February to May 1999. In addition to the known X-ray sources, of which we detect about 20, we have found 7 new sources, which range in intensity from 1--60 mCrab. Some of the new sources are highly variable on time scales ranging from minutes to days, with amplitudes as high as 50% RMS. In follow-up observations of one new source, XTE J1710-281 there is evidence for a 400 s eclipse. We present monitoring light curves for a selection of these sources. We have also been able to measure the diffuse X-ray emission from the galactic bulge; it has a scale height of approximately 5(o) . RXTE monitoring observations of the region are continuing.
