The Venus Express Radio Science Experiment VeRa performs regular radio-sounding measurements as part of the ESA Venus Express (VEX) mission since 2006. The first nine occultation seasons yielded more than 350 observations. The polar orbit of Venus Express provides us with the opportunity to study the troposphere and mesosphere in the altitude range of 40 to 90 km over a pole-to-pole range of latitudes, and a wide range of local times. We derive vertical profiles of temperature and pressure from retrieved profiles of neutral number density, and use these to investigate the thermal structure as a function of latitudinal and temporal variability. The Venus mesosphere is highly variable as the result of atmospheric waves and turbulence. Profiles of atmospheric static stability are latitude dependent and nearly adiabatic within the middle cloud region. Abrupt changes in the static stability occur on and near the boundaries of the middle cloud layer, the vertical distribution of which shows a distinct latitudinal dependence. We plan further study of the correlations of wave activity with the static stability.
