Recent evidence suggests that strong opposition surges are not necessarily correlated with albedo. We have measured the opposition surge of the binary Trans-Neptunian Object (TNO) 2000 YW134 and find that its R-band reflectance increases by 2 magnitudes/degree between phase angles of 0.3 and 0.05 degrees. Another binary TNO, 1997 CS29, exhibits a similarly large opposition surge [1]. Spitzer Space Telescope and Herschel Space Observatory observations indicate that both of these are relatively dark objects with albedos 0.10 or less [2,3]. Rabinowitz et al. [1] suggest that ejecta exchange [4] between the two components could account for these strong opposition surges. Dobrovolskis et al. [5] find that the Tethys Lagrangian satellites Telesto and Calypso, two bodies with extremely high albedos [6] also exchange ejecta. Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 observations of Telesto and Calypso at small phase angles and Cassini Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS) observations over complete rotational phases show that these bright icy bodies have opposition surges comparable to those of TNO binaries. This work is supported by NASA Planetary Astronomy and Cassini Data Analysis Programs.
