A new star inside the N44 complex H II region in the Large Magellanic Cloud is detected which turns out to be the exciting star of a distinct part of this region, referred to as N44C1. CCD images show clearly that this star is surrounded by nebular emission in the He II 4686 line, over 1.5 pc in radius. The spectra of this star indicate that it is an O star, and not a Wolf-Rayet. Two spectra of the nebula in this region have also been taken which allow the measurement of a Zanstra temperature for this star of about 70,000 K. This is much higher than ever found for main sequence stars. It is believed that this star is an initially massive star (about 80 solar masses) which has just evolved from the main sequence towards the left, as predicted by recent models for the evolution of stars taking mass loss into account.
