We investigate the numbers and properties of millisecond binary pulsar systems that should be observed at the present epoch by means of population synthesis techniques. We explore parameter space as completely as possible by examining various modes of binary formation (e.g., initial component masses and mass ratio distributions), and by assuming various birthrate functions. We show that the orbital period distribution of these systems can be reproduced depending on assumptions with respect to the efficiency of envelope removal during the common envelope phase. We also comment on the nature and observability of the pulsar's degenerate companion.
