We present new results obtained from HST Hα imaging, and UV-optical spectroscopy of the prototypical LINER nucleus in NGC 1052. The Hα images reveal an optical jet that extends several arc-seconds out from the nucleus and is aligned with the radio jet to within a few degrees. The optical jet appears to terminate in bow-shock like features and clearly demonstrates that the jet outflow is interacting with the ambient interstellar medium in the galaxy. Further evidence for shock excitation is present in the HST FOS spectra of the nucleus which shows line ratios consistent with shock model predictions. Two-component photoionization models also reproduce many of the observed line ratios but all photoionization models fail to reproduce the high [OIII]lambda 4363/5007 temperature of 42000 K, which can only be reached in shock heated plasmas.
