The last few years have seen the emergence of an entirely new field in globular cluster studies - the recognition that elliptical galaxies contain more than a single population of globular clusters. This makes globular clusters even more valuable as tools to study how elliptical galaxies formed, since the presence of more than a single population implies more than a single formation process and/or epoch. We will present a brief overview of the history of this new field, with emphasis on the present status of observations and comments on preferred observational techniques. In particular, we will present some new data on several of the prototypical globular cluster systems - those in M87 and NGC 1399. We also will discuss the interesting case of NGC 1427, a low luminosity elliptical in the Fornax cluster, as well as present new HST data on color distributions of very distant cluster systems.
