It is very difficult to directly measure the kinetic temperature of the molecular gas in the external galaxies since the filling factor is much less than unity. While ammonia, with multiple inversion lines in the close frequency range, is an ideal tracer to determine the kinetic temperature without suffering the filling factor issue, the line emission is very weak and the detections of the lines are limited within the nearby galaxies. Here we propose to observe a sample of distant galaxies with strong radio continuum (>5 Jy at 5 GHz) to detect the absorption of the ammonia inversion lines, with which we will determine the optical depth of the lines and therefore the kinetic gas temperature and ammonia column density in the galaxies.
