The neutron star X-ray binary Circinus X-1 is known to have a relatively low proper motion and systemic radial velocity, demonstrating that the system has a substantial peculiar velocity. With a proper motion of <5 mas/yr, high-precision VLBI astrometric observations are therefore the only way to accurately measure the proper motion and hence deduce the formation mechanism of the system. We therefore propose an astrometric campaign, both to measure the proper motion and to constrain the distance to the source via trigonometric parallax.
