We currently undertake a project combining CaII and NaI absorption and 21-cm HI emission measurements obtained with UVES at the ESO VLT, the 100-m telescope at Effelsberg, and the Galactic All Sky Survey (GASS) to systematically study the distribution and physical properties of neutral and ionised low-column density gas in the halo of the Milky Way. In total 177 lines of sight were observed, providing a large absorption-selected data sample for the analysis of gaseous structures in the circumgalactic environment. For some of the sight lines high-resolution radio synthesis observations with the WSRT and the VLA were performed allowing us to study small-scale structures that cannot be resolved with single dish telescopes. We propose ATCA high-resolution HI observations of seven additional sightlines to further investigate the physical parameters of these low-column density gas clouds. The ATCA data will enable us to determine abundances of the gaseous structures and, thus, to draw conclusions about their origin and their influence on the evolution of the Milky Way.
