The Cosmic Origins Spectrograph has been selected as a Hubble Space Telescope replacement instrument for installation during servicing mission 4 in early 2003. COS is a high throughput, moderate reolution spectrograph operating from 1150 - 3200 Angstroms with 300 Angstroms of simultaneous coverage provided in the 1150 - 1780 Angstroms range. The peak effective area exceeds 2000 square cm, and the spectral resolution exceeds 20,000 at all wavelengths. The high throughput of the spectrograph will allow the efficient observation of numerous extragalactic lines of sight, providing the first broad sampling of the intergalactic medium and determination of the distribution, physical state, chemical evolution and mass fraction of the non-luminous baryons in the IGM.
