This review concerns the environments of active close binary stars, namely the RS CVn-type and Algol-type binaries. An introduction to the basics of solar/stellar atmospheric structure is given and a discussion made of the various forms of solar/stellar activity phenomena in relation to close binary systems. The main part of the review discusses recent results in the radio and optical regimes and their consequences for the binary environment and the solar paradigm.
