The problem of calibrating the FGSs for astrometric work involves twocomplementary aspects: the plate scale and the optical distortions.The scale-length desired in these calibration efforts differs. Theessential point of this calibration is to refine our knowledge of theplate scale in the central region of the astrometer FGS for this iswhere all annual parallax work will be executed by the GOs and GTOs.It rests on a set of stars included in the ESA Astrometry satelliteHIPPARCOS's observing list.
