Hyper-luminous IRAS galaxies emit an enormous amount of power {>10^13LSUN} in the far infrared. This emission is attributed to illuminated dust. These galaxies are important a} because of their huge power and b} because they are seen at cosmological redshifts. The major power source of the FIR illumination is still disputed. While most such galaxies have an AGN it has been argued that star formation is the primary energy source. There may also be an intimate connection between AGN and star formation activity. In either case these objects may represent a very important phase in galaxy/AGN evolution. The two most notable objects in this class have recently been shown to be gravitationally lensed with correspondingly overestimated luminosities. It is important to establish if the same is true for other hyper-luminous galaxies. Tidal interactions appear to play a vital role in triggering the activity of ultra-luminous objects at lower redshift. Yet not all objects show signs of interactions. If any hyper-luminous objects do not appear to be interacting new triggers will have to be invoked. This proposal seeks high resolution imaging of a sample containing a large fraction of the most luminous FIR objects known, to: 1} assess the contribution of nuclear and star-burst components; 2} identify lensed sources; 3} investigate whether interactions/mergers trigger the activity.
