We propose to search for ultraviolet line absorption due tointerstellar water in the translucent molecular clouds whichlie in front of the stars HD169454 and HD154368, using Echelle-A of the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph. The proposedobservations will provide a crucial test of astrochemicalmodels for the formation and destruction of interstellarwater; such models predict that the proposed observations willlead to the first detection of water (and the first detectionof any polyatomic molecule) in the diffuse interstellarmedium.
