Our target 47 Cas = HD 12230, a single main-sequence star ofspectral type F0V, has recently been recognized as one of themost active stars on the cooler half of the main sequence. Itsunusually luminous X-ray (logL_ X = 30.5) and radio coronafinds its lower temperature analog in very intensechromospheric and transition region line emissions asevidenced in our first IUE spectra. Evidence for high-levelmagnetic activity is unusual for an F0 star, but the probableage of 47 Cas, ~ 50-70 Myr, puts it close to the Zero-AgeMain-Sequence. High-level magnetic dynamo activity couldperhaps be related to particular, probably brief evolutionarystages in such young stars. We have searched for evidence of aclose, cooler companion to 47 Cas, but have found no evidencefor such a star. With the present proposal, we will address aseries of questions relevant to studies of magnetic activityfor which 47 Cas is an important target: i) How does extremechromospheric activity on an F0 star with a very shallowconvective zone compare with the more familiar solarcounterpart? ii) Is the chromosphere structured as possiblyevidenced in rotational modulation? iv) Do winds co-exist withthe corona (asymmetries in the emission line profiles andpossibly P Cygni features in the UV)? v) Are the line profilescompatible with a single star? It is only with HST that theseimportant questions can be fully answered.
