Hst Proposal Id #6659 Cool Stars

Scientific paper

This project is a search for "superplanets" around selected pre-main-sequence stars in the 1 micron band using WFPC2. Weak T-Tauri stars {WTTS} are thought to have dissipated their circumstellar disks recently, possibly by forming planetary systems. We propose to observe 16 WTTS in Taurus-Auriga and Ophiuchus, the nearest star-forming regions, concentrating on targets that have been demonstrated not to have stellar companions based on recent speckle imaging, deep imaging with CCD and infrared arrays from the ground, and lunar-occultation observations. Superplanets would be detected in their intrinsic thermal radiation. Because of the superb peak-to-wing ratio of its point spread function, HST is uniquely capable of performing this survey and determining the statistical occurrence of superplanets.
