This is a continuation request for GO 6047. We are using HST and infrared speckle imaging to calibrate the mass-luminosity relation {MLR} for stars less massive than 0.2 Msun, with special emphasis on objects near the stellar/brown dwarf border. The strategy is to use the combination of HST and continuing ground-based infrared speckle work to examine subarcsecond binary systems in order to determine masses, luminosities, and the spectral energy distributions of objects at the lower end of the main sequence. The potential payoff of this proposal is high because many of the systems selected were resolved with HST in Cycle 5 and mapping of the orbits has commenced. In addition to contributing to fundamental research on very low mass stars and brown dwarfs, an accurate MLR can be broadly used in the fields of spectroscopic, astrometric and cataclysmic binary research, stellar cluster work, planetary searches, and studies of the galactic and ``missing'' mass. This proposal is being coordinated with continuing work of Benedict and Franz. The total number of orbits remaining in the current program is that granted during the Cycle 5 review for Cycles 6 {12 orbits} and 7 {12 orbits}, but for scientific reasons, we ask that it be split 14+10 rather than 12+12.
