Galaxy/environment correlations continue to provide a useful way to identify the environment-specific physics important at the different stages of galaxy evolution. Here I review how environment is commonly measured in large galaxy surveys, covering regions of the Universe from dense compact clusters to sparse large-scale “voids.” There is no one absolute way to define environment, and I identify two classes of environment measurements, namely physical and statistical. Both classes have different strengths and weaknesses which must be understood when analysing data and drawing conclusions. This is especially true when comparing with other (perhaps differently estimated) environment results.
