SummaryThis review is concerned mainly with problems of the origin and the incipient biostratigraphic use of Precambrian fossils, particularly those described in recent years. The nature and mode of fossilization of such ancient fossils require special consideration because of the higher degree of alteration of these rocks, the possibility of differences in environmental and diagenetic conditions from those of Phanerozoic time, and possible structural differences from all later organisms. Stromatolites, the most common early fossils, require special studies and nomenclatorial conventions. A time framework based on sound general stratigraphic principles is essential. In the absence of international agreement it can only be provisional. Fossils reported from the Archaean, tentatively defined as including rocks older than 2,500 million years, are few and questionable. From the Lower Proterozoic, stromatolites, microfossils including well preserved primitive plants, and possibly trace fossils are known. Middle and Late Proterozoic stromatolites and some microfossils have been used successfully as index fossils for distinctive assemblages, with time ranges of the order of 108 years. Definite trace fossils of animal origin have been found in Middle Proterozoic rocks. Megafossils of soft-bodied animals are known in large numbers from Late Precambrian rocks, some of which underlie sediments with the earliest Cambrian faunas, while others have been dated between about 600 and 700 million years. Problems of the early history of life are briefly reviewed on this basis.
