We propose to use OSIRIS with tip-tilt on the CTIO 4-m telescope to conduct a high resolution near-IR JHK multiplicity survey of 68 Class I and flat-spectrum protostars in the nearby Chamaeleon I, Chamaeleon II, and ρ Ophiuchus dark clouds. Although the binary fractions and separations of older pre-main-sequence stars are now very well studied, virtually nothing is known about the binary properties of more embedded young stars. Do these Class I / flat-spectrum protostars have different binary statistics? Can their binary properties be theoretically understood and correlated with molecular cloud properties, thus shedding light on the physics of star formation? Our proposed observations will help to answer these important questions.
