Knowledge of the three dimensional matter distribution in planetary nebulae (PNe) is essential for understanding the little known nebular ejection mechanisms. A precise determination of the 3-D geometry that gives rise to the observed morphology will enable us to distinguish between ellipsoidal nebulae and projected bipolars, and hence allow us to derive constraints on stellar evolution theories. Here we propose to take long slit spectra at multiple positions across several PNe from which we will derive density profiles (using the [SII] doublet) and monochromatic images. The observed 2-D maps will then be compared to those predicted by our 3-D, self consistent photoionization model (Gruenwald et al. 1997) allowing us to infer the 3-D density and chemical abundance distribution within the PNe, and determine the properties of the ionizing star.
