We study the interaction between emerging magnetic flux and pre-existing coronal field by means of numerical simulations using the magneto-frictional method. By advancing the induction equation, the magneto-frictional method models the coronal magnetic field as a quasi-static sequence of non-linear force-free field configurations evolving in response to photospheric driving. A general feature of the simulations is the spontaneous formation of current sheets. At these interfaces, the field line torsional coefficient changes abruptly across separate domains of connectivity. Since the code evolves the vector potential, it allows us to calculate how much relative magnetic helicity and free energy is stored in the system. By using temporal sequences of observed vector magnetograms as the boundary condition, this model is potentially suitable for modeling the evolution of solar coronal fields.
