The Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment (OSSE) on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory has performed numerous observations of the galactic plane and galactic center region to search for gamma-ray line and continuum emissions and to measure their angular distributions. Gamma-ray lines of particular interest include the 511 {keV} line produced by positron annihilation and the 1.809 {MeV} line resulting from the decay of radioactive {(26) Al}. An identification of the source of the positrons and {(26) Al} is critical to our understanding of the processes involved in their production. Analysis of the OSSE galactic center and galactic plane observations indicate the presence of a 511 {keV} line and positronium continuum. The OSSE data are well fitted by a two component diffuse distribution consisting of spheroidal and disk components with fluxes of (1.81 +/- 0.17)times 10(-3) and (0.52 +/- 0.19)times 10(-3) photons cm(-2) sec(-1) within the inner radian of the galaxy, respectively. This model also provides good agreement with many of the previous 511 {keV} observations of the galactic center region. The OSSE data do not indicate any evidence for a time-variable component of the 511 {keV} line flux. A 3sigma upper limit of 7 times 10(-5) photons cm(-2) sec(-1) at 1.809 {MeV} is obtained when the OSSE observations of the inner galactic plane are combined. If this limit is compared with the reported SMM flux from the galactic center region, it suggests that the latitude extent of the emission is go 5(deg) , FWHM, for any typical (e.g., Population I or Population II) galactic distribution.
